A Two-day Workshop Organised by Holistic Education Trust Maharashtra in Collaboration with IUCAA Pune Focuses on Innovative, Activity-based and Experiential Teaching

Pune: A two-day All Maharashtra Science & Mathematics Teachers’ Workshop – Level 1 & Level 2 was successfully organised by Holistic Education Trust (HET), Maharashtra, in collaboration with the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, on September 27 and 28 at IIC, Kondhwa, Pune.

The state-level workshop brought together 60 male and female Science and Mathematics teachers representing 16 districts of Maharashtra, providing them with an opportunity for professional development, practical learning, academic interaction and exchange of innovative teaching practices.

The workshop was organised under the theme “Innovate • Integrate • Inspire – Reimagining Science & Mathematics Teaching.” The theme reflected the central objective of the programme—to encourage teachers to move beyond conventional classroom methods and make the teaching of Science and Mathematics more practical, engaging, concept-oriented and connected with students’ everyday experiences.

Focus on Innovative and Experiential Teaching

During the two-day programme, participating teachers were exposed to a range of innovative teaching-learning approaches. The sessions focused on hands-on activities and experiments, activity-based learning, conceptual understanding, interactive problem-solving, scientific thinking, Mathematics teaching strategies, Astronomy and Space Science, and the effective use of practical teaching-learning resources۔

Resource persons conducted interactive sessions in which teachers were encouraged not only to observe but also to actively participate in experiments, activities, discussions and problem-solving exercises. The emphasis was on developing classroom practices that can help students understand scientific and mathematical concepts through exploration, observation, questioning and practical experience.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of developing curiosity, logical reasoning, critical thinking and scientific temper among students. Teachers discussed ways of connecting textbook concepts with real-life situations so that learning becomes more meaningful and enjoyable.

Teachers from 16 Districts

One of the significant features of the workshop was its statewide participation.Sixty Science and Mathematics teachers, including women educators, from 16 districts of Maharashtra attended the programme.

The presence of teachers from different regions provided an opportunity for participants to exchange their classroom experiences, challenges and successful teaching practices. Group activities and discussions encouraged collaborative learning and helped participants learn from one another.

Developing Resource Persons Across Maharashtra

An important long-term objective of the initiative is to create a strong network of trained Science and Mathematics resource persons across Maharashtra.

The organisers emphasised that the learning gained through the workshop should not remain limited to individual participants. Teachers are expected to take the ideas, activities and teaching methodologies back to their respective schools and districts and share them with fellow educators.

Through the Level 1 and Level 2 training process, HET Maharashtra aims to identify and develop teachers who can eventually contribute as resource persons, support teacher-training programmes and promote innovative Science and Mathematics education in different parts of the state.

Academic Interaction and Practical Learning

The workshop provided a platform where teachers could interact with resource persons, raise questions, clarify concepts and discuss challenges encountered in actual classroom situations.

Practical activities were an important component of the programme. Teachers explored how simple experiments, demonstrations, educational materials and activity-based approaches could be incorporated into regular classroom teaching without making the learning process unnecessarily complicated.

The sessions also encouraged teachers to view themselves not merely as transmitters of textbook information but as facilitators who encourage students to explore, question, experiment and discover.

Valedictory Function

The two-day workshop concluded on September 28 with a Valedictory Function

Maulana Ilyas Khan Falahi, Patron of Markazi Talimi Board Maharashtra, joined the programme and interacted with the participating teachers. He encouraged educators in their academic journey and highlighted the importance of teachers in developing knowledgeable, responsible and confident future generations.

Guests and academicians associated with the programme appreciated the initiative and encouraged teachers to continue upgrading their knowledge and teaching skills.

Resource persons were also acknowledged for sharing their expertise and contributing to the academic quality of the workshop. Participants who successfully completed the programme were recognised for their active involvement.

Commitment to Quality Education

The organisers stated that professional development of teachers is essential for improving the quality of education. Changes in knowledge, technology and classroom requirements make it necessary for educators to continuously learn, experiment and update their teaching practices.

Through such workshops, Holistic Education Trust Maharashtra seeks to provide teachers with opportunities for continuous professional development and to create platforms where educators can learn from experts as well as from one another.

The organisers expressed their sincere gratitude to IUCAA Pune, all resource persons, guests, academicians, participating teachers, volunteers and members of the organising team for their cooperation and contribution towards the successful completion of the two-day programme.

HET Maharashtra stated that it intends to continue such educational and teacher-development initiatives with the broader objective of strengthening Science and Mathematics education and building a network of capable and motivated educators across Maharashtra.
