Screening of Controversial Film Chhaava in Parliament Sparks Debate

New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend a special screening of the Hindi film Chhaava at the Balayogi Auditorium in Parliament on Wednesday. The event, featuring the film’s cast and crew, including lead actor Vicky Kaushal, will also be attended by Cabinet ministers and Members of Parliament.
The film, which portrays the life of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has been hailed in certain circles for its depiction of historical bravery. However, it has also sparked controversy for allegedly promoting a divisive historical narrative that fuels communal sentiments. Critics argue that Chhaava portrays a one-sided version of history, glorifying anti-Mughal resistance while ignoring the nuanced relations between different communities in India’s past.
Prime Minister Modi has previously praised the film, calling it an important depiction of history. Speaking at the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in February, he highlighted Sambhaji Maharaj’s struggle against the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. His remarks, along with the film’s messaging, have raised concerns among historians and members of the Muslim community, who feel that such portrayals reinforce anti-Muslim biases rather than fostering historical accuracy and communal harmony.
Several scholars have pointed out that historical figures like Aurangzeb are often misrepresented in popular culture, leading to the vilification of the Mughal era and the erasure of its contributions to India’s civilization. Many also fear that the film could be used as a political tool to justify the growing Hindu nationalist narrative, which frequently marginalizes Muslim heritage and identity in India.
Despite its box office success since its release on February 14, 2025, Chhaava remains a subject of debate, with some calling for a more balanced representation of India’s history. The film industry has recently faced increasing scrutiny for producing content that aligns with majoritarian ideologies, sidelining the rich, multicultural history of the subcontinent.
As the special screening takes place in Parliament, the controversy surrounding Chhaava continues to highlight the broader tensions between history, cinema, and contemporary politics in India.
