SDPI Condemns Sambhal Mosque Incident as Violation of Places of Worship Act 1991

– Raheem Khan

Kota: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) District Committee, Kota, organised a protest at Hazira Wale Baba Dargah today. The demonstration was in response to the recent survey of Shahi Jama Masjid Sambhal, subsequent riots, and the tragic police firing that claimed five lives. Protesters highlighted administrative failures and condemned the policies of the Uttar Pradesh government.

State President Ashfaq Hussain criticised the Sambhal lower court for violating the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which mandates the preservation of religious sites as they existed after India’s independence. Hussain argued that the court’s decision to allow the controversial survey disregarded this law and fuelled communal tensions. He also condemned the provocative slogans raised by locals and the police during the surveys, accusing the administration of failing to maintain law and order, leading to unnecessary bloodshed.

Naveed Akhtar, a Kota District Committee member, described the incident as a complete breakdown of law and order. He warned that such actions destabilise societal harmony and criticised the government for failing to protect citizens. Akhtar also raised concerns over the Ajmer Dargah case, claiming it has hurt the sentiments of not just Muslims but other communities as well.

Women leaders Sitara Begum, District President of Women India Movement, and Wafiya Ansar, State Executive member, echoed similar sentiments. They condemned the alleged bias in Uttar Pradesh government policies and called for justice.

The protest began with an address by District General Secretary Mohammad Abid, while District Secretary Aftab Hashmi concluded the event, thanking participants, media, and administrative representatives.

Key Highlights of the Protest:

  1. SDPI denounced the survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, the riots, and the police firing.
  2. The party alleged that allowing the survey was a direct breach of the Places of Worship Act.
  3. Protesters demanded a fair investigation and adequate compensation for the victims’ families.
  4. Speakers accused the UP administration of mishandling the situation and fostering communal tensions.
  5. SDPI also highlighted issues surrounding the Ajmer Dargah, emphasising its impact on interfaith harmony.
