Mangaluru: The Social Democratic Party of India has re elected M K Faizy as its national president during the party’s sixth national representative council meeting held in Mangaluru. The two day meeting concluded on Wednesday.
Faizy remains in judicial custody following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in Delhi in March 2025. The agency arrested him in connection with a money laundering case linked to the banned Popular Front of India. SDPI leaders have rejected the charges and described the case as a politically driven action.
Former Rajya Sabha member and All India Muslim Personal Law Board vice president Obaidullah Khan Azmi acted as the election officer during the proceedings. Party representatives said the process followed organisational rules and reflected the collective will of the council.
Mohammad Shafi, acting national president of SDPI, said the council adopted a resolution condemning Faizy’s arrest. He described the detention as undemocratic and aimed at silencing minorities, marginalised groups, farmers, and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.
The council also passed a resolution accusing the Union government of misusing central agencies. The resolution named the NIA, CBI, and ED. It also accused authorities of invoking the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against political opponents.
Party leaders said such actions weaken democratic institutions and restrict political dissent. They urged supporters to continue lawful political engagement.
During the meeting, SDPI announced the formation of its youth wing named Young Democrats. Party leaders said the wing would focus on political awareness and participation among young people.
The re election signals continuity in SDPI leadership despite ongoing legal proceedings against its president.
