Seminar in Delhi Highlights Threats to Constitution: “The Preamble Under Pressure”

– Mohd.Naushad Khan
A seminar titled “The Preamble Under Pressure: Challenges to India’s Foundational Principles” was held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the Deputy Chairman Hall, Constitution Club of India, New Delhi.
The event was organized by Hum Bharat Ke Log, a citizens’ platform that works to uphold the Indian Constitution’s core values.
Supreme Court advocate Sanjay Hegde called the removal of ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ from the Preamble a direct attack on Indian identity. He said these values are rooted in the freedom struggle and reflect an inclusive culture.
Veteran journalist Anil Chamadia said the Preamble shapes equal citizenship. He warned that removing these terms targets the nation’s foundation. He recalled that a private member’s bill in 2005 had made a similar demand, showing that this is a long-standing agenda of the RSS and corporate interests.
Congress leader Shahnawaz Alam accused the RSS of dividing India and defending caste inequality. He said ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ threaten their ideology. He also criticized Mayawati, Ramdas Athawale, and Chirag Paswan for staying silent despite claiming Ambedkar’s legacy.
Advocate Shariq Abbasi said removing key words from the Preamble dilutes the Constitution’s core values.
Activist Manvi Verma urged everyone to stand firmly against the BJP’s efforts to erase Ambedkar’s vision.
Journalist Masihuzzama Ansari said the event came at a time when democratic values and the Constitution’s soul are under threat. He said the platform unites youth, civil society, and experts to defend India’s constitutional ideals.
The seminar began with an introduction by Akhlaq Ahmad, a founding member of Hum Bharat Ke Log, who explained the platform’s mission and purpose.
The session was moderated by Dr. Khalid Mohammad Khan.
The event saw participation from senior lawyers, journalists, scholars, students, and socially aware citizens from across India.
