Seminar on Ascetic-like Hakeem Abdul Hameed at Ghalib Academy

New Delhi: A seminar titled “Ascetic-like Hakeem Abdul Hameed” was organized at Ghalib Academy to commemorate the 116th birth anniversary of Hakeem Abdul Hameed. The event, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, was presided over by renowned Urdu poet, Gulshan Rai Kanwal. In his presidential address, Kanwal praised Hakeem Abdul Hameed as a complete man who established educational, medical, and welfare institutions. He further highlighted that Hakeem Abdul Hameed elevated the Unani system of medicine to modern standards and was a true Sufi with a deep connection to God.

The Secretary of Ghalib Academy explained that the seminar’s theme was chosen by the Governing Council, in line with their focus on “Sufism and the Bhakti Tradition in Urdu and Hindi Literature.” The title “Ascetic-like Hakeem Abdul Hameed” was selected for this occasion, marking his birth anniversary, and approved by the Ministry of Culture. Various programs were designed around this theme to honor Hakeem Abdul Hameed’s contributions and explore his life as a Sufi and a visionary in medicine and education.

Dr. Aqeel Ahmed, presenting his paper, emphasized Hakeem Abdul Hameed’s profound impact on the fields of medicine and education. He highlighted that his philanthropic work would benefit people for generations. Other speakers, including Aleemuddin Asadi, noted that Hakeem Abdul Hameed’s life was dedicated to the welfare of society. His simplicity and humility earned him the respect of all, and his legacy continues to inspire. Dr. Abrar Rahmani also reflected on Hakeem Abdul Hameed’s efforts to bridge differences among scholars through sincerity and unity.

Dr. Amanullah and Khawaja Syed Mohammad Nizami shared personal insights into Hakeem Abdul Hameed’s life, stressing his deep spirituality and dedication to humanity. Prof. Sharif Hussain Qasmi referenced ‘Kashf al-Mahjub’ to describe the ascetic aspect of religion that emphasizes serving humanity, a principle embodied by Hakeem Abdul Hameed. The event concluded with a poem by Matin Amrohi, the launch of Prof. Tariq’s book Kitab al-Ain, and certificates distributed to students learning Urdu script, commemorating the life of an extraordinary figure.
