Senior Muslim League Leader and Former Kerala Minister K. Kutty Ahammed Kutty Passes Away at 71

13August 2024: Kerala’s political landscape has lost a towering figure with the passing away of K. Kutty Ahammed Kutty, a senior leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), on Sunday. He was 71 years old.

Kutty Ahammed Kutty’s political journey began in 1992 when he was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in a by-election from the Tanur constituency. His deep connection with the electorate and his dedication to public service quickly earned him respect and prominence within the Indian Union Muslim League, one of Kerala’s major political parties.

In subsequent years, he continued to serve his community with distinction. He was re-elected in 1996 and 2001 from the Tirurangadi constituency, further solidifying his influence in the region. His leadership and commitment to social welfare were recognized in 2004 when he was appointed as the Minister of Local Self-Governance in the Oommen Chandy cabinet. In this role, he was entrusted with several critical portfolios, including Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporations, Town Planning, Regional Development Authorities, and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration.

During his tenure as Minister, Kutty Ahammed Kutty played a key role in shaping Kerala’s local governance structure. His efforts focused on empowering local bodies and ensuring that development initiatives reached even the most remote areas of the state. His leadership in town planning and regional development was instrumental in laying the groundwork for sustainable urban growth in Kerala.

Beyond his ministerial responsibilities, he was a guiding force within the IUML, advocating for the rights and welfare of the Muslim community in Kerala. His vision for inclusive development and his ability to build consensus made him a respected figure not only within his party but across the political spectrum.

His passing away is a great loss to Kerala, marking the end of an era of dedicated public service. K. Kutty Ahammed Kutty leaves behind a legacy of commitment to his constituents, a deep understanding of governance, and a passion for social justice that will continue to inspire future generations of leaders. The Indian Union Muslim League and the people of Kerala mourn the loss of a leader who devoted his life to the betterment of society.
