Shabana Mahmood Emerges as Front Runner in Race That Could Deliver UK’s First Muslim PM

London: Shabana Mahmood has emerged as a leading contender for the post of Prime Minister in the United Kingdom following political turmoil involving Labour leader Keir Starmer. Mahmood currently serves as Home Secretary and has taken a firm position on immigration policy, drawing wide attention due to her background and public stance.

Mahmood is the daughter of immigrants from Pakistan and traces her roots to Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Despite this background, she has argued that residence in the UK remains a privilege rather than an entitlement. She has said immigration laws must reflect this principle.

The Home Secretary has supported proposals to extend the qualifying period for permanent residence for most migrant workers from five years to ten years. Around forty Labour members of parliament remain divided on the proposal. Mahmood has defended the move in public interviews. She said five years offers a short route to permanent settlement along with full state benefits. She added the proposed framework includes limited pathways for reduction of the waiting period.

In a 2025 interview, Mahmood stated her aim involves addressing illegal migration and repairing what she described as a broken system. She linked irregular migration to social division and stressed the need for policy responses which restore public confidence.

Mahmood follows a pattern established by previous Home Secretaries from minority backgrounds. Priti Patel advanced a plan involving relocation of asylum seekers to Rwanda and introduced a points based system. Suella Braverman pursued tighter controls on student and graduate visas. James Cleverly increased salary thresholds and announced measures to reduce overall migration.

Despite a change in government, Mahmood’s position signals continuity in border policy. Her rise has also placed her on course to become the first Muslim Prime Minister of the UK, marking a historic moment in British politics.
