Hyderabad: Advisor to Telangana Government (SC, ST, OBC & Minorities) Mohammed Ali Shabbir today called on Governor Jishnu Dev Varma at Raj Bhavan.
During the meeting, Shabbir briefed the Governor on the implementation of 4% Muslim reservation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which so far benefitted over 20 lakh poor socially and economically backward Muslims in the Telugu states since 2004-05.
He also briefed the Governor about other schemes being implemented by the state government for the welfare of minorities in Telangana.
Shabbir informed the Governor that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy recently launched 28 integrated residential schools that would benefit thousands of students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and Minorities.
The Congress government in undivided Andhra Pradesh had provided 5% reservation for Muslims but as it was breaching the 50% barrier of reservation for all segments, it slashed the quota for Muslims to 4% on the direction of the Supreme Court.
After bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the governments in both states continued implementation of 4% reservation for backward Muslims in education and public employment.
In the recent recruitment of 11,000 teachers in Telangana, 720 Muslims were appointed under the 4% quota.
