Shahjahanpur Tense After Arrest Over Remarks on Prophet

Shahjahanpur: Tension gripped the city on Friday evening after a local man was arrested for making derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad and the Quran on social media. The incident triggered a massive protest, with hundreds gathering outside Sadar Kotwali police station demanding strict action against the accused.

The accused, identified as KK Dixit from Bahaduran, was arrested following a complaint by members of the Idgah Committee. Police confirmed that an FIR has been registered.

Qasim Raza of the Idgah Committee condemned the remarks, saying that such actions deeply hurt community sentiments. He urged the administration to deliver harsh punishment but appealed to people to remain peaceful and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

Despite the arrest, the crowd refused to disperse and continued protesting for several hours. Police used mild force to control the situation, leading to a brief stampede. Shoes and personal belongings were left scattered on the road as people ran in panic.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi said immediate action was taken, and the accused was placed in custody. He urged people not to believe rumours and assured that law and order was under control. District Magistrate Dharmendra Pratap Singh added that officials were still negotiating with some protesters who stayed on the road but confirmed there was no stone pelting.

To prevent escalation, police deployed forces from seven stations along with the Quick Response Team. A flag march was conducted in sensitive areas. The commotion lasted nearly three hours before calm was restored.
