Ahmedabad, July 18: Prominent civil rights activist and lawyer Shamshad Pathan has been named the president of the Gujarat Chapter of Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), a group led by senior Bombay High Court lawyer Yusuf Muchhala. Pathan, 43, has been engaged with numerous marginalized communities in Gujarat, including victims of the 2002 riots, stated the Indian Express.
As the new APCR head in Gujarat, Pathan plans to concentrate on human rights issues affecting tribals, Dalits, and minorities. He aims to conduct para-legal training across the state to educate people about the new criminal laws introduced by the government in July.
Pathan also serves as the convener of the Alpsankhyak Adhikar Manch in Ahmedabad, advocating for minority rights. He was a close associate of the late Mukul Sinha, a renowned human rights lawyer in Gujarat, and is connected with Jan Sangharsh Manch, founded by Sinha.
Previously the vice president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in Gujarat, Pathan left the party in 2022 due to disagreements with the leadership.
