Sharjeel Imam to Contest Bihar Assembly Elections as Independent Candidate

Patna / New Delhi— Activist Sharjeel Imam, currently incarcerated under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, has formally announced his intention to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections as an independent candidate. According to his lawyer Ahmad Ibrahim, Imam is considering running from the Bahadurganj constituency in Kishanganj district , reported the Scroll.
The Bahadurganj seat, presently held by Mohammad Anzar Nayeemi—elected in 2020 on an All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen ticket—has since moved to the Rashtriya Janata Dal .
Imam was arrested in January 2020 following speeches delivered in Delhi, Aligarh, Asansol, and Chakband during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). Authorities allege that his remarks incited the Muslim community and triggered the deadly North East Delhi riots, resulting in 53 fatalities and widespread injuries .
He is accused under several sections of the Indian Penal Code—including sedition and statements promoting enmity between groups—and remains jailed under UAPA provisions. Despite receiving bail in multiple cases, new charges have consistently obstructed his release .
The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections are anticipated to take place in October or November. If Imam’s candidacy materializes, it would mark a notable development: a jailed political prisoner seeking a legislative seat from within custody .
