Shimla: Protests erupted in Sanjauli, Himachal Pradesh, on Wednesday over the ongoing controversy surrounding the construction of a mosque, which has been a point of contention since 2010. The mosque, located in Shimla, has faced allegations of being illegally constructed, leading to rising tensions in the region. Despite nearly 45 hearings, the issue remains unresolved.
The protests took a violent turn when demonstrators clashed with police, who responded with lathi-charges and water cannons to control the situation. Muslim leaders have condemned the use of excessive force, particularly against children, and expressed concern over the growing hostility towards the Muslim community in Shimla. They have called for an impartial investigation and fair treatment under the law.
Himachal Pradesh Minister Vikramaditya Singh addressed the situation, stating that if the mosque is found to be illegal, it will be demolished. However, he assured that the government is committed to resolving the issue in accordance with legal procedures and urged all communities to maintain peace. The Muslim community, while respecting the law, has emphasized the importance of a fair and transparent investigation, free from political and communal biases.
Protestors, primarily from Hindu groups, have demanded that the mosque be sealed until a final decision is made. They have also called for a new policy regarding street vendors, advocating for licenses predominantly for Hindus. This demand has raised concerns among Muslim vendors, who fear discrimination and marginalization under the proposed policy.
In response to the unrest, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the formation of a committee to address the street vendors’ policy, ensuring proper verification before issuing licenses. He emphasized the state’s commitment to maintaining communal harmony and promised that any actions taken would be based on legal findings.
The Muslim community in Shimla has called for justice, urging the government to ensure that their rights are protected and that any decision regarding the mosque is made based on facts and not influenced by communal pressures. They have also appealed for peace and unity, emphasizing the need for dialogue and understanding among all communities to resolve the issue amicably.
