SIO Calls on Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Ensure Safety of Indian Students in Kyrgyzstan

22 May 2024: According to reports, approximately 15,000 Indian students are studying in Kyrgyzstan. On Saturday, the Indian government advised its students in Bishkek to remain indoors following reports of mob violence in the Kyrgyz capital, specifically targeting international students from South Asia.

Following the incident on May 21, the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of India sent an email to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, urging immediate intervention regarding the safety of Indian students in Kyrgyzstan.

Expressing concern over the recent incidents of mob violence against Indian students in Kyrgyzstan, the SIO emphasized that the safety and well-being of Indian students studying abroad are of utmost importance.

The situation in Bishkek, where mobs targeted foreign students, including Indian and Pakistani nationals, is alarming. The attacks on student hostels have left many students injured and traumatized. It is distressing to learn that students who appear to be from the Indian subcontinent were specifically targeted during these violent incidents, the SIO wrote.

The SIO demanded that the Ministry take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of Indian students in Kyrgyzstan, urging the following measures:

  1. Enhanced Security: Coordinate with Kyrgyz authorities to provide increased security around student hostels and educational institutions where Indian students reside.
  2. Emergency Helpline: Establish an emergency helpline for Indian students, allowing them to report incidents or seek assistance promptly.
  3. Liaison Officers: Appoint liaison officers at Indian embassies or consulates to assist students in distress.
  4. Dialogue with Kyrgyz Authorities: Engage in dialogue with the Kyrgyz government to address underlying issues and prevent further violence.
  5. Evacuation Plan: If the situation worsens or if students feel unsafe, the Indian government should help evacuate them and keep them prepared with emergency contacts, assembly points, and essential kits.

The SIO stated that they appreciate the Ministry’s attention to this matter and trust that swift action will be taken to protect Indian students abroad.
