New Delhi, 1 October 2023: On Wednesday, September 27, a 26-year-old Muslim man was brutally beaten on suspicion of taking a banana intended as an offering at a temple. This incident occurred during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in the Sundar Nagari area, where a Ganapati idol had been installed. Israr had allegedly picked up a banana placed in front of the Ganapati idol.
A group of men beating him with large sticks was caught on camera and widely circulated on social media. Israr passed away at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
A delegation from the Students Islamic Organization of India (SIO), led by Imran Hossein, National Secretary, visited the home of Mohammad Israr, who was beaten to death by a mob in the Sundar Nagari area here.
In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), SIO India wrote, “Exemplary punishment should be given to the culprits, and swift justice should be delivered to the deceased’s family. The family has raised safety concerns, and it is imperative for the authorities to ensure their safety. This mob lynching, which occurred in the capital of the country, clearly indicates the extent of hatred against Muslims and how this hate-mongering has reached a level of normalcy. It is high time for the government to consider criminalizing Islamophobia to prevent such crimes against Muslims,” demanded the delegation.
