The Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of Jamia Millia Islamia strongly condemns the arbitrary actions of the Jamia Millia Islamia administration in restricting students’ entry into the campus. On 14th December, the administration issued a notice stating that canteens, libraries, and faculties within Gate No. 7 would remain closed from 1 PM onwards on 15th December due to “maintenance work.” However, it is evident that this decision was taken to suppress peaceful protests planned by students to mark the anniversary of the brutal police action on 15th December 2019.
The protests aimed to condemn the abuse of power by Delhi Police against students who were peacefully demonstrating against the unconstitutional Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), was repressed. By shutting down essential facilities like libraries, canteens during semester-end exams and restricting access, the administration is clearly attempting to stifle dissent and silence voices of resistance on campus.
There is no clarity regarding the so-called maintenance work mentioned in the notice. Students have long raised concerns about the lack of proper resources in libraries, canteens, and faculties, yet these issues have remained unaddressed. This sudden move of library closure, at the peak period of exams, raises serious doubts about the administration’s intentions.
SIO Jamia Millia Islamia denounces these undemocratic actions and urges the administration to immediately withdraw these restrictions. We demand transparency, accountability, and respect for democratic values within the university.
