SIO Protests Assam Evictions, Calls Out State-Sponsored Islamophobic Violence

Santhapuram: The Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO), Al Jamia Unit in coordination with the Santhapuram Area, staged a protest condemning the ongoing state-sponsored evictions and police brutality in Assam. The demonstration was held in response to the recent spate of forced displacements targeting Bengali-origin Muslims in the state.
In a strongly worded statement, SIO denounced the Assam government’s actions as a systematic campaign of Islamophobic violence disguised as land clearance. “Over 3,300 families have been violently uprooted in just one month,” the organisation stated, highlighting the recent incident in Goalpara, where one person lost his life and several others sustained injuries during the eviction drive.
“These are not isolated incidents. They are part of a calculated project of communal oppression,” said the protest leaders, stressing that branding entire communities as “encroachers” without offering legal recourse or rehabilitation is a grave human rights violation.
SIO accused the state of weaponising bulldozers and bullets against the marginalised. “This is not a matter of law and order,” the organisation added, “but of communal hatred being institutionalised through the machinery of the state.”
Terming the evictions as part of a wider Hindutva agenda aimed at criminalising Muslim identity and uprooting them from lands they have lived on for generations, SIO demanded an immediate halt to all eviction drives, a judicial probe into the associated violence, and full rehabilitation of displaced families.
“Evictions must not become tools of ethnic cleansing,” SIO asserted, reaffirming its solidarity with the affected families and calling for an end to the politics of bulldozers and bloodshed.
