Hyderabad: Responding to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s call to revive student politics, particularly at Osmania University, the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) Telangana has reiterated its long-standing demand for the restoration of students’ union elections in state universities.
SIO views student unions as more than representative bodies; they are crucial platforms for fostering democratic values, ensuring social justice, and empowering students to actively contribute to societal progress. Universities, as hubs of knowledge and character-building, suffer in the absence of elected students’ unions, leaving students without a voice in shaping policies and addressing key issues such as quality education, inclusivity, and campus welfare.
“The revival of students’ unions elections is not just a procedural step but a critical move toward nurturing a generation of socially responsible and aware leaders,” SIO Telangana president stated. “Students unions serve as a bridge between the administration and the student community, encouraging constructive dialogue, addressing systemic flaws in education, and promoting meaningful dissent.”
SIO has called on Telangana government to take decisive steps toward implementing students’ unions elections across all universities. It emphasised that this move would empower students and create an environment conducive to the growth of intellectual and democratic traditions in higher education institutions.
The Chief Minister, during his live address in Hyderabad, said, “The absence of ideological grounding in today’s student politics has led to a decline in meaningful engagement. Reviving student union elections is a step toward empowering students and fostering accountability,” he remarked.
