Marzia Shanu Pathan, a spirited social activist from Mumbra, Maharashtra, known for her community service and commitment to the youth, has taken on a political role as the National Working President of the Nationalist Student Congress, the student wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar’s faction. Marzia’s appointment letter was presented by Sharad Pawar himself, alongside Jitendra Awhad, the party’s National General Secretary, reports the ATV.
Marzia first gained attention two years ago when a video of her directing traffic during Ramadan in Mumbra, a predominantly Muslim area in Mumbai, went viral. This act of community service was widely praised and established her as a symbol of responsibility and leadership. Since then, she has been a vocal advocate for the underprivileged, tirelessly addressing issues impacting minority groups.
With her new role, Marzia intends to focus on youth and student concerns, especially those related to education. “This position comes with immense responsibility,” Marzia shared, emphasising her aim to help students overcome financial obstacles by ensuring they receive government scholarships and other aid. She stressed that many students remain unaware of available scholarships and benefits due to a lack of information. “Our country will only progress if today’s youth are educated,” she remarked.
Marzia’s commitment to her community is well-documented. Through her organisation, MSP Care Foundation, she has led awareness programs on constitutional rights, organised eye-checkup camps, and provided free cataract surgeries for senior citizens in Mumbra. Her father, Ashraf Shanu Pathan, former Leader of the Opposition in the Thane Municipal Corporation, has also contributed significantly to Mumbra’s development, working alongside her to address pressing issues such as water and waste management, health, and safety.
Jitendra Awhad, acknowledging her dedication, drew comparisons between Marzia and Malala Yousafzai, recalling her advocacy for women’s education from a young age. “She is a born leader with a clear vision,” Awhad said, expressing confidence that Marzia’s efforts would extend beyond Mumbra and influence youth across Maharashtra.
Marzia recently voiced her opposition to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights’ (NCPCR) proposal to halt funding for madrasas, stating that the move would harm students from minority communities. Her video on the importance of preserving traditional teaching methods in madrasas gained significant attention online.
As Maharashtra prepares for upcoming elections, Marzia’s dedication, deep-rooted connection with the youth, and strong social media presence are expected to strengthen the NCP’s outreach and support.
Marzia Pathan’s story of resilience and her focus on creating positive change in her community continues to inspire many, promising a progressive future for the next generation.
