Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi has strongly criticized the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, terming it a “brazen assault on the Constitution.” Addressing a CPP meeting at the Central Hall, she condemned the manner in which the bill was “bulldozed through Parliament” and urged party lawmakers to adopt an “aggressive and combative” stance against the BJP-led NDA government, reported the Times of India.
Sonia Gandhi accused the ruling party of deliberately fostering polarization and subverting constitutional principles. She also expressed strong opposition to the proposed One Nation, One Election (ONOE) Bill, calling it another attempt to undermine democratic institutions.
Raising concerns about women’s representation, she pointed out that despite the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, the provision for one-third reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBC women remains unimplemented. She also accused the Modi government of diluting landmark laws enacted by the UPA, such as the RTI Act, MNREGA, Forest Rights Act, and the Land Acquisition Act.
The former Congress president highlighted the government’s failure to conduct the Census, which has deprived 14 crore people of their legal rights under the National Food Security Act. She accused the BJP of rebranding and appropriating UPA-era initiatives as its own and urged party members to expose these tactics through public outreach.
Sonia Gandhi also criticized the suppression of opposition voices in Parliament, alleging that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge were being denied opportunities to speak. She called on Congress MPs to aggressively counter BJP narratives and highlight governance failures in BJP-ruled states.
“The Modi government is dragging the country into an abyss where the Constitution will remain only on paper. We must fight for justice and expose this government’s failures,” she asserted.
