Bengaluru: Waqf Boards from southern states urged the Centre to make the UMEED (Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development) portal available in regional languages during a review meeting on Monday. Officials from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana attended the meeting organized by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs.
The discussions focused on improving transparency, efficiency, and ownership of Waqf properties through the central UMEED portal. Since its launch in June 2025, all Waqf Boards across India are required to upload details of their properties within six months. Southern state representatives reported that they have already begun the process and will accelerate the work in the coming days.
Representatives requested that the portal support regional languages to make it more accessible to local administrators and stakeholders. Ministry officials responded positively, assuring that updates will make the portal multilingual and more user-friendly soon.
The meeting also featured progress reports from southern states, particularly Karnataka, on the activities of their respective Waqf Boards. Officials highlighted the need for modern tools and training to ensure proper management of Waqf assets and to maximize their developmental impact.
The programme was held under the UMEED Act, 2025, which came into effect in April. According to the Ministry, the government is committed to modernizing Waqf administration and unlocking the full developmental potential of Waqf properties to benefit minority communities.
