On the first day of Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s winter session, Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders staged a demonstration outside the Vidhan Sabha on Monday. Holding banners, they protested against various issues, including the recent violence in Sambhal and allegations of paper leaks.
The winter session, which will run until December 20, is expected to focus on several key issues affecting the state. According to ABP News, discussions may include the Sambhal violence, the state’s anti-encroachment drive, preparations for Mahakumbh, and irregularities in hospitals following incidents like Jhansi hospital fire.
The protests came in the wake of violence in Sambhal district, which resulted in five deaths. The violence erupted following a court-ordered survey of Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, initiated in response to a plea alleging the mosque, dating back to the Mughal era, was built on a temple site.
Carrying placards, SP members raised slogans against the state government, criticising it for failing to deliver on its promises of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, tackling unemployment, and addressing alleged police “atrocities.” They also demanded justice for the families of those killed in the Sambhal violence.
