SP MP Nadvi Calls for Consensus on Uniform Civil Code, Prioritizes Health and Education

New Delhi, July 19: Consensus is a prerequisite for implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and any move that disregards the views of all sections would be unconstitutional, says Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Maulana Mohibullah Nadvi.

In an interaction with PTI editors at the agency’s headquarters, Nadvi emphasized the shared concerns of the Muslim community with other sections of the country, particularly highlighting the importance of education and health for development.

Political Journey and Influence

Nadvi, the imam of the Jama Masjid near Parliament, has been a practicing imam for 19 years and is a rare example of a Muslim religious leader transitioning into electoral politics. Winning his Lok Sabha seat in Rampur by over 87,000 votes, Nadvi’s candidacy was initially contentious, with veteran SP leader Azam Khan reportedly opposing it. However, Nadvi insists that the election was fought with full support from the party and no internal opposition.

Nadvi’s entry into politics challenges the notion that only the wealthy or well-connected can succeed. His victory is attributed to widespread support from all sections of society, reflecting his reputation and the trust he garnered as an imam.

Views on Renaming Places and Progress

Addressing the trend of renaming places and cities, Nadvi argued that progress is not achieved through name changes but through substantive work and societal improvement. He stressed the need to focus on positive actions rather than dwelling on historical narratives.

Uniform Civil Code and Democratic Values

On the topic of the UCC, which the BJP is pushing in states like Uttarakhand, Nadvi stated, “There should be a consensus among everyone to move towards it. If you don’t take someone’s views into account then that would be by force and hence against the Constitution.”

He underscored the importance of consensus as the spirit of democracy, noting the diverse cultural foundations across India that must be respected.

Commitment to Serving Rampur

Nadvi remains committed to serving his constituents while fulfilling his religious duties. He highlighted the critical need for a medical college in Rampur, a district with a population of 1.8 million but lacking adequate medical facilities. Urging the Health Minister to address this issue, Nadvi pointed out the daily struggles of residents with limited healthcare resources.

Political Ideology and Alliances

Nadvi chose the Samajwadi Party due to its ideological commitment to socialism and equality, first championed by Mulayam Singh Yadav and now led by Akhilesh Yadav. He praised the SP-Congress alliance in Uttar Pradesh, noting the ideological unity between the two parties.

Reflecting on his initial days in Parliament, Nadvi expressed disappointment at the gap between members’ oaths and their subsequent actions. He hopes for a future where parliamentary work truly reflects constitutional values, transcending caste, creed, and religion.

In short, Maulana Mohibullah Nadvi’s foray into politics from his religious leadership role exemplifies the potential for diverse voices in Indian democracy. His emphasis on consensus, educational and healthcare improvements, and principled politics resonates with the broader aspirations for inclusive and progressive governance.
