Special Iftar for Deaf and Speech-Impaired Held at Masjidul Ihsaan in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: A heart-warming and unique Iftar gathering for deaf and speech-impaired individuals was organised on Sunday at Masjidul Ihsaan in Salamat Nagar, Karumbukadai. The programme was jointly conducted by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Coimbatore, and The South India Welfare Trust.

Around 100 differently-abled men and women participated in the special Iftar event, making it a meaningful and memorable occasion. For many attendees, it was their first visit to a mosque, as communication barriers had previously limited their engagement in such religious spaces. The visible joy and emotion among participants reflected the significance of the inclusive initiative.

All guests were warmly welcomed and served Iftar items, including dates, fruits, juices and refreshments to break their fast. They were also offered traditional Nombu Kanji prepared at the mosque, which was received with great appreciation. Later, Biryani was served for dinner, adding to the spirit of hospitality and brotherhood that marked the evening.

Following the Iftar, an interactive Islamic awareness session was conducted, featuring a question-and-answer segment on Islam, the significance of Ramadan, the importance of fasting, and related spiritual themes. The session was led by Abdul Rahman, Administrator of Masjidul Ihsaan, who patiently addressed participants’ queries. Sign-language interpretation was provided by Aslam, ensuring smooth communication and active participation. Many attendees engaged enthusiastically, asking questions and seeking clarification on various aspects of faith.

At the conclusion of the programme, Islamic books were distributed as gifts to all participants by JIH Coimbatore. The gesture was met with heartfelt appreciation.

Participants expressed hope that similar programmes would be organised in more mosques to enable greater inclusion of differently-abled individuals in religious and community life.

The event was coordinated by Abdul Hakkim, Secretary of JIH Coimbatore. Organisers stated their intention to expand the initiative on a larger scale in the coming Ramadan.

The gathering stood as a powerful example of compassion, inclusiveness and communal harmony, embodying the true spirit of Ramadan by connecting hearts beyond words and breaking barriers through care and service.
