CAIR Labels Stanford University a ‘Hostile Campus’ for Second Year

New Delhi: The Council on American-Islamic Relations has again designated Stanford University a “hostile campus” in its 2025 Hostile Campus Ratings Report, marking the second consecutive year the university received the label. The report evaluated 51 universities on policies, leadership actions, disciplinary measures, and public statements affecting students facing Islamophobia. Stanford scored 37 percent, below the 70 percent threshold for hostility.

According to CAIR, points were deducted when institutions failed to address Islamophobia, responded inadequately to harassment reports, or maintained weak free speech protections. The findings incorporated data from CAIR’s 2024 Campus Climate survey, highlighting incidents reported by Muslim students since 2023.

The report specifically criticized Stanford’s handling of campus protests in 2024, including arrests, charges, and the suspension of students who barricaded themselves inside the university president’s office. CAIR raised concerns that free speech policies could limit discourse on Palestine and restrict student activism.

Stanford spokesperson Angie Davis stated that free speech is central to the university’s mission and is protected under California law. She noted that while some campus spaces can be used without advance permission, others require registration, and policies prohibit disruptions to classes or institutional operations.

Students, including Iman Deriche of Students for Justice in Palestine, said administrative scrutiny of organizing activities created an environment of fear. CAIR’s report cited specific instances, including pushback on events such as an October 7 vigil for Palestinian lives lost, reflecting broader tensions over campus activism, free expression, and institutional responsibility.

The renewed designation places Stanford in a national debate on campus speech and the treatment of Muslim and pro-Palestinian students. Observers expect these ratings to influence ongoing discussions about balancing activism with operational and legal obligations.
