Stone-Pelting at Muharram Processions Triggers Communal Tensions in Bihar’s Katihar and Gopalganj

Communal tensions flared on Sunday in Bihar during Muharram processions, as incidents of stone-pelting were reported from Katihar and Gopalganj districts, leading to violent clashes and a heavy police deployment, reported the Tripura Times.
In Katihar’s Naya Tola area, unidentified individuals reportedly hurled stones at a Muharram procession, triggering retaliation and a violent exchange between two groups. During the chaos, witnesses reported that Hindutva elements shouted “Jai Shri Ram” slogans and raised Islamophobic chants, further escalating the situation. Eyewitnesses alleged that local police stood by as silent spectators during the initial phase of the violence.
Senior police officials later arrived on the scene with reinforcements to restore law and order. The incident has left the local Muslim community shaken, with residents expressing deep concern for their safety and demanding immediate action and justice.
In a separate incident in Gopalganj district, a clash broke out during a Muharram procession near Shikmi Dhala under the jurisdiction of Manjha Police Station. More than 10 individuals were injured as sticks, stones, and bricks were used during the melee.
Upon being informed of the situation, police forces rushed to the area and managed to bring the situation under control. Additional personnel have been deployed in both areas to prevent further disturbances and maintain peace.
The incidents have sparked fresh fears of communal unrest, with local leaders and activists calling for calm, justice, and accountability.
