Iran Opens Alternative Routes in Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing Tensions

Tehran: Iran has announced alternative maritime routes for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, citing risks from sea mines in the main channel. The move comes during a temporary reopening of the waterway under a two week ceasefire agreement.

In a statement, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards instructed vessels to follow designated entry and exit paths to reduce the risk of collisions with sea mines. Authorities said the measures aim to ensure safer navigation through one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.

The Strait of Hormuz carries around one fifth of global oil shipments. Disruptions in recent weeks have affected energy markets and shipping operations. Tehran had restricted access to the route since early March, leading to a sharp rise in global oil prices.

The reopening follows a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, reached shortly before a stated deadline for military escalation. Under the truce, Iran agreed to allow maritime traffic to resume under controlled conditions.

Shipping companies have begun adjusting routes based on the new guidelines. The requirement to follow specific corridors highlights ongoing security concerns in the region.

The announcement reflects continued uncertainty despite the ceasefire. Maritime operators remain cautious as they assess risks linked to navigation and regional tensions.

The development holds direct implications for global trade flows, especially for countries dependent on energy imports. The coming days will determine whether traffic stabilises under the new system or faces further disruption.
