– Joseph Victor Edwin SJ

The Henry Martyn Institute in Hyderabad concluded its Summer School on Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations, held from April 29 to May 4. The program, spearheaded by Joseph Victor Edwin SJ, Lecturer of Theology and Christian-Muslim Relations at Vidyajyoti, Delhi, aimed to foster peaceful coexistence in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

The summer school emphasized the importance of four key dialogues with Muslims. These dialogues encompassed the dialogue of life, action, religious experience, and theological exchange. Participants engaged in discussions, sharing their joys, sorrows, and spiritual riches while striving for mutual understanding and respect.

Classroom sessions led by Muslim and Christian scholars provided comprehensive insights into various aspects of Islam. Additionally, visits to local mosques, madrasas, a Shia Ashur Khana, a Sufi Dargah, and the Students Islamic Organisation’s office allowed participants to immerse themselves in different facets of Muslim life in India.

Mrs. Sunanda Victor, a participant, emphasized the significance of dialogue as a form of reciprocal communication that builds deeper interpersonal connections. She stressed the importance of respect and friendship in promoting understanding among individuals of different faiths.

Another participant, Ms. Hebsiba, highlighted the necessity for Christians to have a solid understanding of their faith and traditions when engaging in dialogue with Muslims. She emphasized the importance of approaching each other with an open mind and positive attitude.

Rev. Dr. Packiam T. Samuel, Director of the Institute, emphasized the need for Christians and Muslims to come together, listen, and collaborate towards the greater good. He reiterated the importance of interfaith dialogue in fostering peaceful coexistence.

In summary, the Summer School on Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations served as a platform to equip participants with the skills necessary for promoting mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence in an increasingly diverse society.
