New Delhi: The demolition of Madni Mosque in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, has sparked controversy. The state government claimed the mosque was built on government land. The mosque administration challenged this in the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court strongly disapproved of the demolition. It issued a contempt notice to the UP government. Officials must respond within two weeks.
Justice B.R. Gavai’s bench expressed dissatisfaction over the demolition. The court warned that such actions violate its orders. Notices were sent to the District Magistrate and other officials. The court warned that those guilty of contempt would not be spared.
Reports say part of the mosque was bulldozed earlier this month. The Supreme Court issued a “show cause notice” to officials. It questioned whether action should be taken against them for violating orders. The court ruled that no further demolition should occur until further notice.
On 9 February, local authorities demolished a portion of the mosque. They called it illegal. This led to protests. Opposition leaders condemned the Yogi Adityanath government.
This case has sparked legal and political debate. It raises concerns over religious structures and judicial compliance. The Supreme Court’s intervention has drawn national attention to the issue.
