Supreme Court Grants Bail to SP Leader Azam Khan and His Son in Machine Theft Case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan and his son Mohammad Abdullah Azam Khan in the case of a stolen sweeping machine from the Rampur Municipality. The verdict, delivered on Thursday, comes as a major relief for the father-son duo, who had been facing legal troubles since 2022.
The case originated when authorities recovered a municipal sweeping machine from the premises of Jauhar University, which is linked to Azam Khan. Following the investigation, an FIR was registered, naming Azam Khan, his son, and their associate Anwar Salim as accused. The case alleged that the theft had taken place in 2014.
A bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal reviewed the case details, including the duration of imprisonment served by the accused, before granting them bail. However, the court clarified that if the conditions of bail are violated, the state reserves the right to seek its cancellation.
Azam Khan and his son had moved the Supreme Court after the Allahabad High Court denied them relief in its September 21, 2024, order. The legal proceedings were initiated following a complaint by Waqar Ali Khan in 2022, which accused them of stealing the municipal road-cleaning machine. With this ruling, the Supreme Court has provided temporary relief to the SP leader and his son while the case continues.
