Supreme Court Issues Notice on Shahi Idgah Mosque Plea Against Consolidation of Suits in Krishna Janmabhoomi Case

The Supreme Court on Friday, April 4, 2025, issued a notice on a petition filed by the Shahi Idgah mosque management challenging an Allahabad High Court ruling. The mosque committee objected to the High Court’s decision to consolidate various suits filed by Hindu petitioners in the ongoing Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute in Mathura.

A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna agreed to examine the plea, which contests the High Court’s October 2024 order rejecting a request to recall its earlier January directive to combine the cases.

In addition, the apex court briefly reviewed a separate plea from the mosque side that opposes another High Court order. That order had included the Union Home Ministry and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as parties in the case — a move the mosque management also contests.

The Supreme Court has scheduled both matters for further hearing on April 8, 2025.

The legal battle revolves around claims by Hindu litigants who assert that a temple once existed at the site of the Shahi Idgah mosque and seek to reclaim and consecrate the location as the original birthplace of Lord Krishna, Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi.
