New Delhi — The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a response from the committee managing the Sambhal Masjid in Uttar Pradesh regarding the status report filed by the state government concerning a well located within the mosque premises, reported the Livelaw.
A bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a petition related to the protection of Waqf property, specifically the well, which has become the center of a legal and communal controversy in Sambhal district.
The Uttar Pradesh government recently submitted a detailed status report to the apex court, outlining its position on the ownership and historical significance of the well. However, the bench emphasized that the masjid committee must be given an opportunity to present its version before any conclusions are drawn.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing on behalf of the masjid committee, argued that the state government’s claims were unfounded and that the well had always been an integral part of the mosque’s structure and usage.
The court has granted the committee time to file its response and scheduled the next hearing for a later date. The matter continues to raise sensitive questions around religious property, historical records, and state authority.
