New Delhi :The Supreme Court on Monday expressed strong displeasure over Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah’s apology regarding his derogatory remarks against Colonel Sophia, calling it unacceptable. The Court rejected his plea and ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising three senior IPS officers from outside Madhya Pradesh — including at least one female officer — to probe the matter. The Court directed the SIT to submit a status report by May 28, reported the Dawat News.
Despite an FIR being filed on the orders of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, police have so far failed to take any action against the minister. The Supreme Court noted this inaction and decided to intervene suo motu, expressing its serious concerns over the lack of accountability and transparency.
The bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh questioned the sincerity of Shah’s apology, asking for the video footage of both his original comments and his apology. “Some people apologize through gestures, others with crocodile tears. We want to know how you apologized,” the bench said.
Earlier, Vijay Shah had made vulgar and insulting remarks about Colonel Sophia during a public event, sparking nationwide outrage. Despite public condemnation, no action had been taken against him due to his influence within the ruling BJP. With both the High Court and now the Supreme Court taking note of the issue, pressure is mounting on the state to act.
The Supreme Court has also issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government and emphasized that it would closely monitor the SIT’s progress and ensure justice is delivered.
