New Delhi, June 13: In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of India has granted a stay on the release of the contentious film “Hamare Baarah,” starring Anu Kapoor and directed by Ravi S. Gupta. The stay will remain in effect until the petition currently pending before the Bombay High Court is resolved.
The film has sparked significant controversy due to its provocative narrative and depiction of issues surrounding the Muslim population in India. Critics argue that the movie distorts Quranic verses to advance a narrative that unfairly blames the Muslim community for population growth.
The petition to halt the film’s release was filed by Azhar Basha Tamboli and represented by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR). Advocate Fauzia Shakeel, along with Ujjwal, served as legal counsel for the petitioner.
The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the gravity of the concerns raised by the petitioners and highlights the ongoing debate over the portrayal of sensitive social issues in media. The decision will hold until the Bombay High Court addresses the merits of the case.
