Supreme Court Supports Education Rights of Rohingya Refugees

New Delhi, February 14: The Supreme Court has ruled that no child should be denied education, raising hopes for 40,000 Rohingya refugees in India. The court emphasized that education should be free from discrimination.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh questioned the living conditions of Rohingya refugees and asked for details about their residences. This development raises hopes that Rohingya children may soon enroll in government schools.
The NGO ‘Rohingya Human Rights Initiative’ filed a petition demanding school admissions, free healthcare, and subsidized rations for Rohingya refugees. A final Supreme Court verdict is awaited.
Many Rohingya refugees in Delhi welcomed the court’s remarks. Naeem (name changed), a refugee, said, “We are happy with the court’s comments. School admissions have been a challenge, but this may change.”
He explained that most schools require an Aadhaar card for admission. A favorable ruling would bring relief. “We fled persecution. Until Myanmar is safe, we hope Prime Minister Modi will help us,” he said.
Advocate Manak Gupta, representing Rohingya NGOs, noted that in 2019, the Supreme Court had ruled that Rohingya children must receive education. He said they have again approached the court to ensure school admissions.
The case is closely monitored, with human rights activists hoping for a decision that secures education for Rohingya children.
