Adhikari’s Remarks on Muslim Migrants Spark Political Row in Nandigram

Nandigram: Remarks by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari targeting Muslim migrant workers have triggered a political controversy ahead of the West Bengal polls. Speaking at campaign rallies in Sonachura and Gokulnagar, Adhikari warned Muslim workers from Nandigram to “mend their ways” while casting their votes.

He referred to employment patterns of local residents, stating that over 30,000 people from Nandigram work in states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Odisha. He highlighted figures of Muslim workers in these states and reminded them that these regions are governed by the BJP. He urged them to act carefully to avoid issues after the election results.

Adhikari also stated that he was noting political expressions during the campaign period. His remarks drew strong criticism from the Trinamool Congress. Party leaders accused him of using threats and intimidation during the election process.

TMC candidate Pabitra Kar said elected representatives hold responsibility to maintain peace in their constituencies. He stated that voters would respond through the ballot. A party spokesperson added that the issue would be raised with the Election Commission.

Data from a public policy research group has added to the debate. An analysis found that 95.5 percent of deleted names from voter rolls in Nandigram belonged to Muslims, despite the community forming about 25 percent of the population. The report noted that this disparity emerged during later stages of the revision process.

The developments have intensified political tensions in Nandigram, where voting remains closely watched.
