Damascus: The devastating impact of nearly 14 years of civil war in Syria continues to haunt the nation’s youngest generation, with more than half of school-age children deprived of education, according to a report by charity group “Save the Children”.
The charity revealed that around 3.7 million Syrian children are out of school, while the majority require urgent humanitarian aid, including food, shelter, and psychological support.
“Immediate action is needed to reintegrate these children into the education system,” emphasised Rasha Muhrez, Save the Children’s Syria director.
Schools have been turned into shelters for displaced families, exacerbating the education crisis.
Years of conflict, compounded by natural disasters like the February 2023 earthquake and crippling economic sanctions, have pushed millions of Syrian families into extreme poverty. Muhrez warned that sanctions, are severely affecting ordinary Syrians, limiting humanitarian efforts.
With 7.5 million children needing immediate assistance and 6.4 million requiring psychological help, the plight of Syria’s children demands global attention. Save the Children urged the international community to prioritise education, healthcare, and protection for Syria’s war-traumatised youth.
