New York: Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Koussay Aldahhak, reaffirmed on Monday his mission’s commitment to continue working for the Syrian people, despite the recent political upheaval in the country. He emphasised the need to maintain state institutions during the transition and urged the UN to act against Israeli attacks on Syria.
“We are dedicated to defending Syria and supporting its people. Our mission will persist until further notice,” Aldahhak stated.
The remarks come after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad following a swift insurgent offensive that led to his flight to Moscow, where he reportedly sought asylum. Aldahhak expressed hope for a brighter future for Syria, calling for the establishment of a state based on freedom, equality, democracy, and the rule of law.
However, as Syria navigates its transitional phase, Israel has intensified its military operations in the region, including airstrikes on alleged chemical weapons sites and the seizure of a buffer zone. Aldahhak condemned these actions, urging the UN and the Security Council to uphold international peace and security and to compel Israel to respect international law and withdraw from occupied Syrian territories. The UN has also criticised Israel’s actions, labelling the buffer zone’s seizure a violation of the 1974 ceasefire agreement.
Aldahhak stressed that the UN mission remains under the directives of Syria’s current leadership, working to ensure continuity until a new government is established. “This transition is for Syria’s future. We call on the international community to support us in rebuilding and ensuring justice against aggression,” Aldahhak concluded.
