Taj Mahal Tops Visitor Charts Among ASI Monuments

NEW DELHI: The Taj Mahal in Agra drew the highest footfall among centrally protected ticketed monuments in FY 2024-25, leading both domestic and foreign visitor numbers. Government data released on World Tourism Day shows 6.26 million domestic visitors and 0.645 million foreign visitors entered the Mughal-era mausoleum during the year. Sun Temple, Konark logged 3.57 million domestic visitors, while Qutub Minar, Delhi recorded 3.20 million. Among foreign visitors after the Taj, Agra Fort and Qutub Minar each drew about 0.22 million.

Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) reached 9.95 million in 2024, up 4.52 percent from 2023. NRI arrivals rose to 10.62 million, up 13.22 percent year on year and 52.15 percent over 2019. International Tourist Arrivals touched 20.57 million, an 8.89 percent annual rise and 14.82 percent above 2019.

The compendium notes a balanced spread across age groups. The 35 to 44 bracket formed 20.67 percent of FTAs, and the 45 to 54 bracket formed 20.24 percent. The gender split stood at 57.7 percent male and 42.3 percent female.

Outbound travel from India reached 30.89 million departures in 2024, up 10.79 percent. Air travel formed 98 percent of departures. The sector supported about 84.63 million jobs in 2023-24 and contributed 5.22 percent to GDP.
