Tamil Nadu Muslim Groups Demand Greater Electoral Representation Ahead of 2026 Polls

Chennai: Muslim organisations in Tamil Nadu have urged major political parties to field more candidates from the community in the 2026 Assembly elections. They argue that Muslim representation in the state legislature remains far below the community’s share in the population.

Groups including the Indian Union Muslim League, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi and Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath have raised the issue publicly. Muslims account for about six percent of Tamil Nadu’s population. However, Muslim MLAs make up less than three percent of the Assembly.

Data from previous elections supports their claim. In 2021, only seven Muslim MLAs were elected, and two became ministers. The 2016 to 2021 term had five Muslim MLAs, while the 2011 to 2016 term had six. Parliamentary representation has remained lower.

IUML MP Kani K Navas said major parties should allocate at least 14 to 15 seats to Muslim candidates. Leaders from Muslim organisations also cited findings of the Sachar and Ranganath Misra committees, which documented low political representation.

Some leaders alleged that major parties prefer allocating a few seats to Muslim-led outfits instead of nominating Muslim candidates directly. One functionary claimed internal discussions in 2021 questioned the need to field Muslim candidates, assuming community votes would consolidate elsewhere.

Leaders estimate Muslim voters influence outcomes in 25 to 30 constituencies, including Ramanathapuram, Gudalur, Vellore, Aranthangi and Kadayanallur. They have called for proportional ticket distribution and leadership roles, stating that fair representation strengthens democratic participation.
