Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has fixed February 24 as the next date to hear the bail application of Maulana Tauqeer Raza in connection with the Bareilly violence case. Justice Ashutosh Srivastava passed the order while hearing the plea on Tuesday, February 17.
The prosecution states that on September 26 last year, Raza called members of a particular community to gather at Islamiya Inter College in Bareilly. At the time, prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were in force.
Despite the restrictions, around 500 people allegedly assembled and moved from Maulana Azad Inter College towards Shyamganj Chauraha. According to the prosecution, the crowd carried placards and raised slogans. Police personnel deployed at the site warned and persuaded them to disperse.
The FIR alleges that some individuals in the crowd became aggressive and insisted on moving forward. It claims that brickbats, stones and acid bottles were thrown at police personnel and gunshots were fired from within the gathering.
The report also states that during the violence, the clothes of some police personnel were torn and two officers sustained injuries. The prosecution says the situation created fear in the area. Police then opened fire in self defence after attempts to disperse the crowd failed.
The High Court will now take up the matter again on February 24.
