Telangana Assembly Approves 42% Reservation for Backward Classes in Jobs and Education

Hyderabad: The Telangana Assembly has passed two significant Bills granting 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in government jobs, educational institutions, and local body elections. This move follows a state caste survey that revealed BCs, including Muslim caste groups, make up 56.33% of the population.

The Bills, titled the Telangana Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of seats in educational institutions and of appointments for posts in services under the state) Bill, 2025 and the Telangana Backward Classes (Reservation of seats in rural and urban local bodies) Bill, 2025, were introduced in the Assembly after the Zero Hour on Monday. Additionally, another Bill aimed at providing sub-caste reservations for BCs was also tabled.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy emphasized the Congress party’s commitment to enhancing BC reservation. “Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had promised to increase BC reservation to 42% if the party came to power. Today, we are fulfilling that promise,” he stated.

The Bills are expected to significantly impact employment opportunities and educational access for BC communities, ensuring better representation in state services and governance. The government aims to implement these reservations effectively to promote social justice and uplift marginalized communities.
