Hyderabad: Government advisor and former minister Mohammed Ali Shabbir said on Friday that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy remains committed to raising the Muslim quota in Telangana from 4% to 10% once the process of securing 42% reservation for Backward Classes is complete.
During a door-to-door campaign in Erragadda for the Jubilee Hills bypoll, Shabbir said the move would be based on data from the state’s recent caste survey. The survey found that over 10.08% of the state’s Muslim population belongs to the BC-E category and continues to experience social and economic disadvantage.
Shabbir credited the earlier Congress government for introducing the 4% Muslim reservation, which he said changed the lives of more than 20 lakh poor families. “The Congress stands for social justice, not tokenism. Expanding BC and Muslim quotas is about rightful representation, not appeasement,” he said.
He was joined by government whip A Srinivas and local leaders during the campaign, where he urged residents to vote for Congress candidate V Naveen Yadav. Shabbir accused the previous BRS government of neglecting minority welfare institutions and failing to enhance the Muslim quota during its tenure.
The Congress has consistently highlighted its record on minority welfare as a core part of its platform in Telangana, where reservation and representation remain key electoral issues.
