Telangana Govt. Imposes One-Year Ban on Gutkha and Pan Masala

Hyderabad, May 27: In a significant move aimed at safeguarding public health, the Telangana government has announced a one-year ban on the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation, and sale of gutkha and pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine. This decision, effective from May 24, 2024, was declared by the Commissioner of Food Safety via a post on ‘X,’ formerly known as Twitter.

The ban is enforced under the powers granted by clause (as) of Sub-Section (2) of Section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, in conjunction with regulation 2.3.4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations, 2011. This measure addresses all forms of packaging, including sachets, pouches, packages, and containers.

The government’s decision is driven by a commitment to reduce the consumption of harmful substances among the populace. The consumption of gutkha and pan masala has been linked to severe health issues, including cancer and other serious diseases.

This initiative has garnered widespread appreciation from intellectuals and health advocates. From an Islamic perspective, this ban is particularly commendable, as the consumption of harmful substances is discouraged in Islam due to the religion’s emphasis on preserving health and well-being. Islamic scholars have also welcomed this initiative, highlighting the importance of such measures in fostering a healthier society.
