The concept of minorities is integral to any constitutional democracy

– Arshad Shaikh

The recent assertion by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale on the last day of the RSS’s Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) baithak in Nagpur regarding the need to rethink the concept of minorities within the Indian Constitution is deeply problematic and runs counter to the principles of constitutional democracy.

The concept of minorities within the Indian Constitution is not about creating divisions but rather ensuring the protection of rights for all individuals irrespective of their religious or cultural background. Minorities, by definition, represent groups that are vulnerable to discrimination and marginalization within a majority-dominated society. Neglecting the concept of minorities undermines the very essence of democracy, which is founded on the principles of equality and inclusion.

Constitutional democracies like India thrive on pluralism and diversity. Denying the significance of minorities disregards the rich tapestry of cultures, religions, and traditions that contribute to the nation’s heritage. Dismissing the concept of minorities undermines efforts to address historical injustices and promote social cohesion.

Democracy thrives on inclusive governance, wherein all segments of society have a voice in decision-making processes. Excluding minorities from the discourse perpetuates inequality and diminishes the legitimacy of democratic governance.

Instead of rejecting minority identities, there is a need for constructive dialogue and understanding to bridge divides and promote mutual respect. The RSS should recognize the importance of religious minorities and strive to help them flourish. This would strengthen the country and bring it more glory.
