New Delhi, July 23: A significant meeting of the Urdu Development Organization (UDO), Delhi State, was held at Bachon Ka Ghar, Daryaganj here, under the chairmanship of Tej Lal Bharti. Bharti, a prominent Gandhian leader and admirer of Hakim Ajmal Khan, expressed deep sorrow over the negligence of the Muslim community towards this historic institution.
Bharti, aged 90, who has dedicated the past 33 years to serving Bachon Ka Ghar, lamented the dwindling membership and the precarious state of the Urdu medium school housed within. “It is a matter of pride for me to be the chairman of a respected Muslim institution. In today’s environment, it is noteworthy that the Muslim community has honored me, a Hindu, with this position,” he stated.
For the first time in its 133-year history, the managing committee of Bachon Ka Ghar has elected a non-Muslim chairman, Tej Lal Bharti, highlighting the community’s generosity and religious tolerance.
Bharti emphasized the need to pay attention to Bachon Ka Ghar, an orphanage established in 1891 by Masih-ul-Mulk Hakim Ajmal Khan for Muslim orphans. For over a century, the institution has provided food, shelter, education, and medical care to countless children, many of whom have gone on to lead successful lives.
Dr. Syed Ahmed Khan, the National President of UDO, underscored the importance of following the paths of Mahatma Gandhi and Hakim Ajmal Khan for the country’s progress and welfare. He expressed gratitude to Tej Lal Bharti and Advocate Masroor Siddiqui for their efforts in maintaining Bachon Ka Ghar amid challenging circumstances. Dr. Khan called for collective action to ensure the survival and growth of the Urdu medium school.
The meeting concluded with unanimous approval of Bharti’s proposal to launch a largescale membership drive. Notable attendees included Tej Lal Bharti, Advocate Masroor Siddiqui, Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, Dr. Athar Mahmood, Dr. Mirza Asif Baig, Advocate Shabi Qazi, Dr. Faheem Malik, Hakim Aftab Alam, and Mohammad Imran Kannauji.
