The Melting of a Metropolis: How Nizam’s ‘Cool City’ Became a Global Heat Zone

Hyderabad: There was a time when May in Hyderabad did not feel like a punishment. Old-timers will tell you of an era, not too far gone, when the onset of the peak summer prompted a reverse migration. While affluent families in the north fled to Mussoorie or Shimla, those in the Deccan simply stayed home. Or rather, people from neighbouring regions packed their bags and headed to Hyderabad to unwind.

The city, cradled by the undulating granite hills of the Deccan plateau and punctuated by hundreds of historic lakes, possessed a unique meteorological gift: the evening redemption. No matter how fierce the daytime sun, by 5:00 PM, a sweeping, cool breeze would roll in over the waters of the Husain Sagar or the Mir Alam Tank. It was a city where families routinely slept on open terraces under cotton blankets, and where the word ‘Air Conditioner’ was an exotic luxury reserved only for the premium talkies of Secunderabad.

Today, that breezy sanctuary exists only in memory. The legacy of the Nizam’s ‘cool city’ has effectively been reduced to ashes.

A grim new global study by the University of Oxford, titled “Moving Beyond Exposure: A Globally Comparable Framework for Heat Risk Assessment in Cities,” has laid bare a terrifying transition. Assessing 205 cities worldwide, the study has placed Hyderabad squarely within the top 30 most heat-vulnerable urban zones on the planet.

The Longest Summer in Living Memory

The ground reality in 2026 feels less like a seasonal shift and more like a permanent climate emergency. Between April 1 and June 5 this year, Hyderabad clocked a staggering 47 days where the mercury breached the 40-degree Celsius mark. It is the highest such count in over a decade, turning the city’s glassy IT corridors and historic core into a relentless kiln.

According to the Oxford framework, the urban sprawl of Hyderabad – now home to roughly 77 lakh people – registered a frightening score of 0.68 on the Heat Vulnerability Index. This index does not merely measure how hot it gets; it measures a city’s capacity to protect its people from the heat.

The data reveals a striking paradox: Hyderabad’s risk factor is now just a fraction away (0.05 to 0.10 points) from notorious global heat traps like Cairo, Manila, and Ho Chi Minh City. Even more alarming is that larger, denser Indian metropolises like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and the perennially scorched national capital, Delhi, have actually fared better on the vulnerability scale. Locally, only Ahmedabad, Nagpur, and Madurai outrank Hyderabad in sheer risk.

Anatomy of a Climate Crisis: The Concrete Trap

How did a city celebrated for its temperate climate end up here? The answer lies in a catastrophic, interconnected cycle of environmental alteration. It began with unchecked urbanisation, where the city systematically waged war on its own geography by blasting away the ancient, heat-absorbing granite hills of Gachibowli and Madhapur and choking hundreds of historic lakes under real estate layouts. This triggered a massive material transformation, as reflective glass, dense concrete, and dark asphalt abruptly replaced the natural green canopy and water bodies.

Consequently, the city became a massive thermal trap. These synthetic materials absorb immense solar radiation during the day and slowly radiate that trapped heat back into the night air, effectively blocking the famous nocturnal cool breeze with a wall of high-rises. To escape this suffocating ambient heat, citizens have entered a vicious AC cycle; as millions of air conditioning units cool interior spaces, they vent massive amounts of anthropogenic heat back into the streets, further driving up the outside temperature and locking the metropolis in a toxic feedback loop.

The Economic Toll on the Common Man

This climate shift is no longer just an academic talking point; it is actively fracturing household budgets. For the city’s middle and lower-income families, surviving the summer has become an expensive affair.

With coolers and ACs forced to run round-the-clock, monthly electricity bills have skyrocketed, eating into savings meant for healthcare and education. Simultaneously, as groundwater tables plummet into oblivion, the civic infrastructure is buckling. Citizens are now forced to pay exorbitant rates to private water tanker mafias just to meet daily domestic needs. The heatwave has evolved from a seasonal discomfort into an economic tax on existence.

Hyderabad’s inclusion in the global top 30 heat-vulnerable cities is the final, definitive wake-up call for the state’s urban planners. For decades, development has been measured solely in square feet of built-up area and FSI limits. If the government does not immediately mandate climate-resilient architecture, enforce aggressive urban afforestation, and legally safeguard its surviving water bodies, the city risks losing its liveability altogether. The ‘Happening City’ is dangerously close to becoming an unliveable ‘Heating City.’
