Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, sparked controversy on Monday by claiming that “thousands died” in the Maha Kumbh stampede in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
The tragedy occurred on January 29 during Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya, with authorities confirming 30 deaths and 60 injuries due to overcrowding and collapsed barricades.
Kharge insisted his estimate was personal and demanded the government provide actual figures. “If I am wrong, I will apologize,” he said. His remarks triggered loud protests from the ruling NDA.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar urged Kharge to retract, stressing that exaggerated claims carry global consequences. Opposition leaders blamed the government for inadequate safety measures.
