KOPPAL – A massive public protest erupted in Karnataka’s Koppal on Saturday, as thousands gathered to oppose the Union government’s controversial Waqf Amendment Act. The rally, which started from Clock Post and moved towards Ashok Circle, witnessed a strong turnout from religious leaders, community members, and political representatives, reported the Maktoob Media.
Maulvi Mufti Nazir Ahmad Taskin of Yousufia Masjid strongly criticized the amendment, calling it unjust and harmful to the Muslim community. “This Act must be resisted at all costs,” he declared.
Addressing the crowd, Hafiz Moyuddin of Diddikeri Masjid accused powerful industrialists like Ambani and Adani of occupying Waqf properties in Mumbai, prompting ongoing legal battles. He claimed the recent amendments to the Waqf Act were tailor-made to facilitate such takeovers and enrich the elite at the expense of the community.
Congress MP K. Rajashekhar also slammed the Union government for targeting Muslim endowments. “Waqf properties are meant for the upliftment of the community and should remain autonomous,” he asserted.
Several political leaders and community figures joined the protest, including former MP Sanganna Karadi, MLA K. Raghavendra Hitnal, municipal council president Amjad Patel, councillors Rajashekar Adoor, Mahendra Chopra, Muthu Kushdagi, Akbar Pasha Paltan, and Karnataka Waqf Board president Peera Hussain Hosalli.
The protest in Koppal reflects growing nationwide resistance to the Waqf Amendment Act, with demonstrators demanding its immediate withdrawal and protection of Muslim religious trusts.
