Tirunelveli: District Collector R. Sukumar has launched a 100 day awareness drive against child marriage and crimes targeting women and children. The campaign runs from November 27 to March 8. It seeks to reach communities across the district through government departments, local bodies, and schools.
Dr. Sukumar administered an anti child marriage pledge at the Collectorate. He said families must prioritise uninterrupted education for girls up to graduation. He stressed the need for better hygiene, nutrition and safe environments for all girls. He urged residents to alert officials or police if they come across any secret arrangements for child marriage.
He stated that child marriage harms the education, personality and health of girls. He added that authorities will file cases against parents who organise such marriages. He also noted the need to educate girls on personal hygiene and nutritious food.
The district plans to use the campaign to inform families and communities about ways to prevent crimes against women and children. Officials will visit neighbourhoods, schools and public institutions. They aim to strengthen community reporting and increase awareness of legal protections.
District Revenue Officer M. Durai, RDO Priya, Chief Educational Officer Sivakumar and District Social Welfare Officer Thajunnisa Begum attended the launch. Departments will coordinate activities throughout the 100 days. The administration said the drive is aimed at reducing early marriage practices and improving safety conditions for girls.
